A few days ago I watched a TED Talk about looking into why we become these personality types. It offered the idea that is was somehow family dynamic to fall into certain categories. It also pointed out the roles difference types played in addiction, including addictions that we don't generally recognize such as relationships.
While I believe being a people pleaser goes well beyond just my family dynamic; I will admit that my personality combined with what was positively reinforced encouraged it. And like any label I believe there are both strengths and weaknesses to this identity.
Knowing I am a people pleaser is only half "the battle" or half the process of conscious growth. While it does help some to recognize how the past plays in, I find it more important to listen to how my body and emotions are responding now. It is important to identify my flexibility limit so that I am only helping people when I have something to give. You cannot pour from an empty teapot.
I'm grateful to recognize my limit last night. I'm grateful to know that it is not always pushed to the limit but I'm grateful to recognize when I am. I'm grateful to have a supportive husband to comfort me and help me release the upset I feel when that limit is reached. I'm grateful for my ability to give. I'm grateful for my caring nature. And I'm grateful to take the time to receive, rest, and give back to myself to refill my reservoir.
What personality type do you identify with most? How do you use it to balance? What awareness does it bring for you?
May today remind us we are more dynamic that our labels. May we find balance and love. Have a beautiful day!
