Last night she learned a new way to get a quick response. As the whole family is battling the end of the flu we went to bed early and exhausted. I worry about fevers so I had the sound turned up higher than usual on the monitor.
A couple hours after going to bed I was awakened by her little voice. At first it was groans but when she couldn't get back to sleep, rather than crying, she began talking. I heard her address her stuffed penguin, Waddles. Next I heard a little fuss and grunt followed by, "oh! icky...icky...icky." A moment later "Yucky!"
I won't even tell you what scenarios were going through my head as to what could be yucky but it warranted my immediate response and she was happy to see me. Everything turned out fine but she picked up on my quick response. She tried it again a few hours later but I was awake enough to simply look at the monitor and see her just sitting there. ...So she stepped it up a notch with her new phrase that is sure to get a response. "Where Mommy go?....I LOVE YOU!" Good morning my sweet child, you win.
Despite waking so early we did not have to stay up long before we were both ready to go back to bed and I could not be happier to have woken at 8:30 a.m. feeling a little more rested despite our night. I will take 8:30 over 4:15 a.m. any day!
I'm grateful for how clever my daughter is and how quick she is learning the art of language. I'm grateful she can communicate some of her needs. I'm grateful for the laughs we have had about words that sound the same, like "bless you" becoming "bless shoe". I'm grateful for the baby monitor that gives me some reassurance sleeping at the other end of the house from my baby. I'm grateful that we got a little sleep and got to go back to bed to sleep in a little. I'm grateful to be one day closer to health for myself and for my family.
What are some funny stories you have about language? What is your favorite part about communicating?
May today help us communicate clearly. May we be understood and have understanding of others' communications. Have a beautiful day!
