Often I take for granted (and yes sometimes am even irritated) by the sound of the squeakers in my dogs' favorite toys as they bid for my attention or the sound of barking or whining as they insist I put down my work for a short romp with them. Yet as time nears for the annual vet check, I am feeling very grateful today for the sounds of pet ownership. This time last year my dog, Austin, was having surgery to remove a cancerous lump just a few short months after the passing of my childhood dog. For several months after that there was renewed gratitude in their health and Austin's recovery, yet eventually I got back to the day to day grind. My younger dog , Pippin (shown in the photo) is now having some "old woman" struggles of her own as her joints give her pain. Her heart is still of a young pup but her body has slowed down. As I got ready for bed last night she began to whine. After a day of being cooped up in the basement while my fiancé and I worked, she was not ready to go to sleep. She stood there, toy ready, looking at me. In that moment I realized how much I take for granted being a pet owner. I'm filled with renewed gratitude for how patient and loyal my dogs are each day. I'm grateful to have them run to meet me when I get home. I'm grateful for the thumping sounds as they romp through the house playing. And yes, I'm even grateful for the repeated squeak of their squeaky dog toys... even the occasional squeaks in the middle of the night as my dog makes sure her favorite toy is still near her. I am grateful for all these sounds because I can't imagine what my life would be like without them and I wouldn't want to. I'm grateful for all the love they give me and for their reminder to take beaks and play. They are such good dogs and I am truly blessed. Do you have pets? What sounds of pet ownership are you most grateful for? Can you imagine your life without those sounds? May you take a moment today to listen to the sounds of those who need and love you. May you make time for the four legged friends. Have a beautiful day!
I believe the way to a better future starts with gratitude today.
