Pippin (front and center) was ecstatic about this idea! There were no apparent boundaries between my bed and theirs so she chose to sleep right on top of my legs. I did say snuggle slumber party after all, didn't I?
Throughout the night Austin came back and forth to join the snuggles and then move off by herself again. If it stormed at all we didn't hear it but certainly not from sound sleep, on my part. And though the sleep was not very good I did get plenty of the cuddly attention we have all been needing (and a few unsuspecting face licks when I would fall asleep).
Getting up this morning I am exhausted but overflowing with love and gratitude. My sweet dogs are nearly 13 and 10 years old. They have both been through surgeries in the last nine months to remove cancer or life threatening growths. They both spent the last couple weeks with upset stomachs from some doggie flu and being off their glucosamine has left them a little creaky getting up and down the stairs. As much as I do not want to think about the fact that they are getting older, it is right in front of me. And nights like last night, while perhaps not restful, will be cherished memories forever.
I'm so grateful for give my fur-babies a snuggle slumber party. I'm grateful for all the affection I received from them. I'm grateful for my ability to pet them right up until I fall asleep and start again each time I am woken. I'm grateful for the gentle nudges and kisses from them to remind me they are still there to receive my affection. And I'm grateful for this memory that will be cherished for many years to come. I'm grateful to give them this time and attention as life will be drastically changing soon with a new baby. And I'm grateful for all the love and blessings I have received by having them in my life.
Do you have pets? How do you show your appreciation for them? What is their favorite way to spend time with you?
May today bless us with enjoying the moments. May we see the beauty in the little actions we take. Have a beautiful day!
