Today is National Compliment Day and I truly believe that there is always something we can recognize the people around us for doing or being. Receiving compliments is like a little present. It can lift someone up or add a smile to their day. So why hold back?
I'm not saying to go overboard to the point of being dishonest. But how many times have we been in line and thought, "I like that shirt." or "cute haircut!" Ok, honestly, that may be a feminine thing. I don't know if guys do that. But surely there is an equivalent for everyone in some form or another. "Great idea at work today, thanks for sharing." My point is we all have compliments to give and people love to hear them.
We often don't know how someone's day is truly going or what is going on in their life. There are best friends of people that after finding out their friend committed suicide reported not even realizing they were "that" sad. Depression is common in our society with a million different factors at play on why. Will one compliment bring someone out of depression, probably not, but it will let them know people care and appreciate them. And that is a good start.
I'm grateful for the uniqueness of every person on this earth. I'm grateful to have a mind that naturally sees compliments. But I'm grateful today to make the effort to override my quiet personality and voice those compliments out loud. I'm grateful to know that it may make a difference in that person's day but I'm equally grateful that I don't need that reinforcement to give a compliment. I'm grateful for all the sweet, random compliments I have gotten over my lifetime and I'm grateful to give back.
What friend or family member can you start with to get "warmed up"? How many compliments do you think you can hand out today that are genuine? What compliment can you look in the mirror and give yourself today?
May today remind us to be as kind to ourselves as to those family we love and cherish. May we open our eyes and hearts to the people around us and recognize them for all the good they do. May the compliments flow freely and may we uplift not only the people we meet but also ourselves. Have a beautiful day!
