Towards the end of summer we lost a large tree in the backyard. Thankfully when it fell toward the house it missed by a few feet, barely landing on the deck. In the process it shattered the bowl of our birdbath. I had put a small bowl of water out on the ground but it frequently dried up or got spilled. The birds slowly left.
For Christmas my parents got me a birdbath. And yesterday when I woke it was raining. I ran to drag it outside and assemble it. I wanted to catch as much rain as possible and start the process of the birds returning.
My husband teased me because in my excitement I ran out in the rain in my robe, no pants, and snow boots. Our backyard is pretty private because of all the trees and brush. And as I pointed out, any neighbor that might see me has already met me so they probably wouldn't be all that surprised. It's not like I fully dress to let the dog out in the middle of the night or even usually first thing in the morning. I'm covered and meeting other people's standards of appearance has never been high on my priorities.
But no matter, I did get the birdbath set up and I didn't see any neighbors. The rain has continued all day and all night. It is too dark to see it out there this morning but I am eager to begin seeing a return of my flock. I only hope the wind howling and raging is tamed by the trees.
I'm so grateful for my birdbath! I'm grateful for the anticipation of the return of Cardinals and other birds. I'm grateful for nature providing the perfect opportunity for my cup...or birdbath... to overflow. I'm grateful for the joy these beautiful birds give my heart. I'm grateful to know the squirrels will also benefit and continue to entertain my dog and toddler. I'm grateful for the invasive honeysuckle's provision of berries that also attract the birds despite our best efforts to get rid of it. I'm grateful to have such a beautiful and wild backyard.
What brings you joy? How can you attract more of it to you?
May today give us clear insight into what fills our hearts. May we take conscious steps to add more of this to our lives. Have a beautiful day!
