Empty space is not a lack. It is actually full of something much more beautiful, possibility. No, I don't me the possibility of what other material stuff we can cram into the space. Though it does offer the possibility of expanding or making room for more, it also offers the possibility of freedom from this material need.
So many things naturally have empty space that we take for granted. This emptiness becomes an invitation. There are simple examples like our empty bed at night, welcoming my husband and I a place to rest our heads. But the true reflection for me is in our hearts. We always have room to love another person. Unlike the shelves in the basement, I do not have to remove someone from my heart to allow another person in. And yet it is the same concept of empty space that allows more love to enter.
I'm grateful for empty space. I'm grateful for the heart's ability to expand and take in without purging. I'm grateful the basement does require purging and does not simply expand. I'm grateful to clear out all the stuff that someone else could be appreciating that we do not use. I'm grateful to imagine the family that is made happy by our donation of a Christmas tree and decor to brighten someone's home for the holidays. I'm grateful to have me needs and wants met. I'm grateful to be so blessed that we have reached a place in our lives we can easily give back. I'm grateful for the empty space we have made and I'm grateful to fill it with love and appreciation instead of material things.
What areas do you want to purge? What is your favorite thing about empty space? What items hold significance to you and which could be passed on?
Mat today remind us what is important. May we open our hearts and lives to the beauty of empty space. Have a beautiful day!
