A study published in 2010 found that planning a vacation increases a person's feeling of happiness. In fact, it found that planning a vacation actually increased happiness more than actually taking the vacation because of the stress travel and getting behind in work can cause. Which is actually great news! If we are going based on what increases our joy then this is permission to dream big without the stress of the details like paying for it or how to get two months off work.
The other side of this is by picturing this wonderful vacation in our minds, we may actually create the opportunity to take it some day when retirement or job situations change. Then not only has it brought months or years of joy already but it can actually bring happiness in its fulfillment because the stressors have been removed.
Whether I go on the vacation or not, I do love planning all the fun things I will do in a beautiful, new, and exotic place. So today I make a commitment to my happiness. I commit to taking time to dream and I give myself permission to dream big! Where will I go? Who will I take? And what adventures will be waiting for me?
I'm grateful for the excitement of even just thinking about a vacation. I'm grateful for the memories it brings back of all the great trips I have been on in the past. I'm grateful for the month I took traveling alone in my car and hiking, gaining new perspectives on life. I'm grateful for an amazing honeymoon to kick off my life with my husband. I'm grateful for every ski trip that helped improve my skills and every scuba trip that conquered fears and let me find serenity. I'm grateful for each little weekend camping trip even when it was just down the road because it was a chance to reconnect with nature. I'm grateful to give my daughter opportunities to fall in love with nature like my husband and I have through camping. And I'm grateful for the family time vacations provide.
If you could go anywhere, no limits, no budget; where would you go? Who would you take with you on that vacation? What activities would you do or not do?
May today allow us to dream limitlessly! May we override the little voice in our head that tries to moderate and just allow ourselves to dream fully. Have a beautiful day!
