In the movies there is always a significant sky when God is speaking, whether it be an ominous cloud or beams of light. In reality I believe God speaks to us every way in a million different ways. I will admit that my God looks different than the ideas many people around me hold and sometimes I even struggle to use that particular word. But the feeling and the message is the same no matter what title I give IT. IT is love. IT is light.
Some people ask how there can be suffering if there is a god. And some people will answer free-will. But I do not believe a child battling cancer is the product of free will. Rather I think it is a matter of contrast.
John Steinbeck wrote, "What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold winter to give it sweetness."
Edgar Allen Poe wrote, "Never to suffer would never to have been blessed."
And while Poe's outlook sounds bleak, it is true that the joyous moments of out life are made more joyous by having experienced the low times. The contrast gives us perspective.
My favorite quote about darkness is by Brené Brown. She said, "Darkness does not destroy the light, it defines it. It is our fear of the dark that casts our joy into the shadows."
God may not boom his voice down out of the sky like in the movies. But IT whispers on the wind always. The darkness in our lives is not hiding the joy and light from us, we do that to ourselves by binding ourselves to it instead of passing through. The darkness enhances the brightness of the light and we get to enjoy it when we realize the benefit of the contrast.
I have a number of friends, myself included, who have experienced the grips f depression. Please remember that the darkness is not walled off from the light. Keep moving and you will find the light again. Sometimes it even finds you.
I'm grateful for this beautiful sky. I'm grateful for the striations of dark and light that have been a reoccurring symbol this week. I'm grateful to hear the whispers. I'm grateful to know that Love does not care which title I choose to give IT as long as I am listening. I'm grateful to feel supported. I'm grateful to find beauty in the contrast and hold these quotes and this reminder in my heart for the days I pass through the dark. I'm grateful for this journey and all the beauty it has held.
How are you? When have you experienced dark and light? If you are in darkness, please know the light is just around the corner. Want a visual? Walk through the woods or a heavily treed park path and see the changes in light.
May today bless us with hope and light. May all those who are being challenged be rewarded. And may we support each other in the balance. Have a beautiful day!
