Most of us, as adults, think of bullying as a thing that happened in school yet it can still happen in the workplace. We focus on teaching children that it is important to not bully but I believe a large part of bullying comes from insecurity and low self-esteem. Bullies often point out flaws in others in order to escape or protect themselves from people noticing their own insecurities.
Building self-esteem is a huge part of ending bullying, both in preventing the "need" to bully and also in giving the self-esteem to know what someone else says about you is a reflection of them. But these steps do not apply exclusively to children and teens. In fact, most importantly it applies to ourselves!
Often we are way harsher on ourselves than we are on others or they are on us. Being aware of our choice of self-talk is so important! Are you bullying yourself? Would you say the things you say to yourself to your best friend?
Being mindful of the language we use, to ourselves and others is critical to stopping bullying. Words like "should" and "can't" as well as labels like "stupid" or "messed up" are red flags and can be very damaging to the self-esteem.
Today, try being conscious of the thoughts that run through your head. What are you saying to yourself? And also be mindful of what you are saying to family, friends, and co-workers. Try replacing should with could or just accepting the way something has already happened if it has already been done. And while you are at it, give yourself some love today. You are worth it!
I'm grateful to speak out about Stop Bullying Day and the importance of self-esteem. I'm grateful for these passions that drive me to help myself and my community to grow in positive ways. I'm grateful to have this blog as an outlet for my voice. I'm grateful to honor my voice and my passions. I'm grateful for the love I see reflected back to me in the mirror. I'm grateful to repeat my mantra today "I am beauty. I am soul. I am worthy. I am whole." I'm grateful to have done the self-work I needed in order to believe these precious statements about myself.
What will your mantra be this morning? What loving expression can you give yourself throughout the day? May today bless you with the courage to practice self-love. May you find ways to do your part to spread love to those around you. Have a beautiful day!
